Three days (23 instructional hours)- Training certification course including
instruction
in basic U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations contained in 49
CFR
pertaining to the transportationof bulk packaged shipments of NON-RADIOACTIVE
hazardous materials and substances.This will include but is not limited to
instruction
in regulatory structure and organization; references and sources of
information; a
hazardous material shipping procedure; the Hazardous Material Table; hazardous
substance definitions and determinations; identification; classification;
packaging;
marking; labeling; shipping papers; placarding requirements; and the provision
of
Emergency Response information as applicable to shipments of hazardous
materials
and substances under 49 CFR. The primary thrust of this course is the
transportation
of hazardous materials under 49 CFR and transportation of hazardous wastes is
incidental.
GSITS’s Three Day
Basic 40/49 CFR
Transportation of Hazardous Wastes
Training Certification Course (GSI-03)
Three days (23 instructional hours)- Training certification course including
instruction
in basic U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations contained in 49
CFR
pertaining to the transportation of less than bulk packaged shipments of NON-
RADIOACTIVE hazardous wastes and substances via highway. This will include
but is not limited to instruction in regulatory structure and organization;
references
and sources of information; a hazardous waste shipping procedure; the Hazardous
Material Table; hazardous wastes and substance definitions and determinations;
identification; classification; packaging; marking; labeling; shipping papers;
placarding
requirements; and the provision of Emergency Response information applicable to
shipments of hazardous wastes and substances by highway under 49 CFR.
Generally the primary thrust of this course is the highway transportation of
hazardous
wastes under 40 CFR and 49 CFR and the coverage of other modes is incidental.
Specific hazardous waste coverage includes generators responsibilities; the
inter-
relationship between 40 CFR (EPA Regulations) and 49 CFR (US DOT Regulations);
the identification and classification of hazardous wastes; and those aspects of
packaging;
marking and labeling; and shipping documentation including the uniform
hazardous
waste manifest as are unique and applicable to the transportation of hazardous
wastes.
Also included is the differences in the meaning of terms such as
“residue” and “sample”
as used in 40 CFR and 49 CFR and their impact on the transportation of these
materials
GSITS’s Four Day
Basic 40/49 CFR
Transportation of Hazardous Materials
and Hazardous Waste Training Certification Course (GSI-04)
Four days (30 instructional hours)- Training certification course including
instruction in
basic U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations contained in 49 CFR
pertaining to the transportation of less than bulk packaged shipments of
non-radioactive
hazardous materials and substances via highway and air. This will include but
is not
limited to instruction in regulatory structure and organization; references and
sources
of information; a hazardous material shipping procedure; the Hazardous Material
Table;
hazardous substance definitions and determinations; identification;
classification;
packaging; marking; labeling; shipping papers; and placarding requirements
applicable
to shipments of hazardous materials and substances by highway under 49 CFR.
Generally the primary thrust of this course is the highway transportation of
hazardous
materials under 49 CFR and air coverage is incidental.
Specific hazardous waste coverage includes generators responsibilities; the
inter-
relationship between 40 CFR (EPA Regulations) and 49 CFR (US DOT Regulations);
the identification and classification of hazardous wastes; and those aspects of
packaging; marking and labeling; and shipping documentation including the
uniform
hazardous waste manifest as are unique and applicable to the transportation of
hazardous wastes. Also included is the differences in the meaning of terms such
as “residue” and “sample” as used in 40 CFR and 49 CFR and their impact on the
transportation of these materials. The primary difference between this course
and
GSI-03 is that the first three days are taught the same as in GSI-01. A Basic
Course
on how to transport hazardous materials under 49 CFR without significant
emphasis
on hazardous wastes. The transportation of hazardous wastes and hazardous waste
transportation training certification is accomplished on day four through the
specific
hazardous waste coverage of the items listed above. This course is designed to
meet
the needs of those that have the need to train both personnel having a
responsibility
for offering for transportation non hazardous waste hazardous materials and
those
having a responsibility for offering for transportation either hazardous
materials and
hazardous wastes or only hazardous wastes, in an efficient manner, at basically
the
same time. Those not having any responsibility for offering shipments of
hazardous
wastes are finished after day three and will receive training certification for
the basic
transportation of hazardous materials. Those that either also or only offer
shipments
of hazardous wastes will take day four and, if satisfactorily completed, will
receive
training certification for the transportation of hazardous materials and
hazardous
wastes. The effect of this course on those not shipping hazardous wastes is
basically
the same as if they took course GSI-01. Obviously, for those that ship only
hazardous
wastes, the effect is an extra day to accomplish the same thing that could be
accomplished in three days using GSI-03 because it is taught from minute one
with a
hazardous waste emphasis. The extra day for those needing the hazardous waste
training is the trade off. It is, however, an efficient method in those
situations where
an organization has to train personnel having no responsibility for the
transportation
of hazardous wastes and those that do. If both can be trained at one time in
this course
the savings over conducting two separate three day courses will be about 40%.

update
as to the recent regulatory changes impacting on the areas covered by that
course.
